Craps Introduction

The Basics

Craps is played on a large, long table (known as the layout), which has been marked off with a number of different betting areas. In the online casinos you will usually only see on half of the layout. On real life layouts there is a large square section in the middle.

craps table

In your online casino, this will probably be to one side of the screen. It's in this square section that wagers known as proposition bets are made. These proposition bets are usually only placed through a dealer in a land based casino, but online casinos should let you do it yourself.

The object

The object of the game is simple: a set of dice will be thrown down the table to give a total. You will have placed a bet that the dice will be thrown down the table to give a total between a certain set of numbers. Depending on your site, you may have other people betting 'with the dice' (they win if you do) or 'against the dice' (they win if you lose)

Betting

Before a new shooter begins the roll you will need to make a pass line bet. This is a as simple as placing some chips in the middle of the band marked 'PASS'.

If a shooter rolls either 7 or 11 or their first roll. you, and all the other pass line bettors win. You lose if the shooter rolls a 2,3 or 12. If the shooter rolls another number, that number becomes what is known as the 'point' number.

The shooter and the pass line bettors would like the shooter to roll the 'point' again before they roll a 7. The shooter keeps throwing the dice, and, if they are lucky enough to hit the point again you (and all the pass line bettors) win. If they hit a 7 first they have 'sevened' out and the pass line bettors lose. This also finishes the round.

Craps Strategy

In craps, strategy is probably not the best word to use because there isn't much opportunity to apply a game strategy - BECAUSE you are basically betting on the outcome of the roll of 2 die!! Craps strategies are therefore more commonly referred to as 'playing styles' - usually the repeat of a play that has worked for you in the past.

Here are a few basic strategies or playing styles:

Bankroll Management

One of the best strategies for craps is intelligent bankroll management. Just like most other games, set yourself a bankroll (or betting) limit and stick to it. This also allows you to pace your bets allowing you to play and have fun for longer.Somtimes you have to walk away if the table isn't HOT for you...maybe come back later and try your luck again with your remaining budget.

Set walk away limits

It's hard to turn your back when winning, but if you set a limit to walk away at, you won't blow all your winnings trying for a bigger slice of the pie. Decide on the amount you would be satisfied to win, and when you reach it - WALK AWAY AND DON"T LOOK BACK. (when playing online - cash out and switch off)

Understand your bets

It makes good common sense to understand what you are betting on and whether or not it is a good bet. A table is on the previous page to help you understand the types of bets and their payoff odds. If you aren't sure about a bet, don't spend more on testing it out than you can afford to lose!
